library economic

January 6th, 2005

Before shutdown my computer, I want to write an short essay on library as a way to practice my English writing skill.

It has been several months when I began to borrow books from Pudong library. The book I borrow today which is an doctor degree thesis reminds me of  digital publishing. Actually it is a big topic which may include knowledge management, intelligent property and so on. I guess such books are very difficult to spread. So they should be digitised, or made into e-Books that can distributed on Internet at a low price.

The book mentioned above only printed 3000 hardcopies at the price of  RMB 13.  Furthurmore the topic this book discussed is very narrow.  So we can’t see any economic scales for such a product.

Then , what can we do to improve such product’s availability? Internet may be a good answer for this problem.  By selled at lower price on the Internet, or even distributed as free eBook, the book may bring the author the fame she want, and the publisher’s web site  can  win  much  click stream.  Whatsmore , through cross selling, such book may bring big economic scale that traditional way can’t obtained.

Library  is  a place  full of  knowledge, if knowledge can’t be shared efficiently, how can we improve our people’s skill?

13 In a word, library is a place full of knowledge, and it should serve the purpose of various kinds of readers. If knowledge can’t be shared efficiently, how can we improve our 14 skill?
